If you’re new to cruising and considering booking a cruise holiday, we’ve put together a first-timers guide of everything you can expect on your first cruise! The booking process can be quite overwhelming for first time cruisers. With so many options available it can be tricky to decide what to book and when to book to get the most out of your cruise holiday.

We are here to help you, so get yourself comfortable as we look at all the information first time cruisers need to know from how to book a cruise for the first time, to what to expect on your first cruise holiday.

Getting value for your money

When booking a cruise, it can sometimes be hard to distinguish if you are getting the best value package, especially if you’re comparing it to your regular land holiday. There are numerous deals, offers and seasonal promotions – our dedicated cruise concierge have over 100 years knowledge and expertise to help guide you on choosing the perfect cruise for you!

Booking your cruise at the right time can save you plenty, especially if you’re looking at cruising during summer holidays or if you’re planning on travelling to a distant destination.

Many cruise lines such as Royal Caribbean, NCL or MSC include periodic offers for kid’s sailing free or getting discount on second and third cruise fares. These are particularly helpful to look out for if you’re cruising with a large party or with children.

Windjammer - Anthem of the Seas

Those looking to visit the more remote regions such as Southeast Asia or Alaska will find that booking these destinations early provides saver rates and benefits for booking well ahead. If you’re not set on specific dates or destinations you could also save a pretty penny with last-minute bookings, also shortening your wait time until you get on-board.

When searching for a cruise, fares are listed per person with rates based on two people sharing a stateroom. Inside cabins and ocean views are typically less costly, with balconies and suites increasing in price based on dates, cruise line and destination.

If you’re still not sure how to get the best deal, our expect cruise concierges can help you on your way.

Is all-inclusive worth it?

Some cruise lines offer all-inclusive as standard. Other cruise lines offer all-inclusive upgrades such as Royal Caribbean they tend to have a base fare and offer packages and other add-ons for things like drinks, entertainment, activities, shore excursions, flights, and transfers. This isn’t because there are lots of hidden extra costs, this is to tailor your cruise holiday specific for you, and make sure you are not paying for something you won’t be getting the most out of.

If you’re looking forward to enjoying a glass of wine as the sun sets, before enjoying the next day exploring after a hearty breakfast, opting for the all-inclusive packages could save you some money in the long-run. However, if you prefer your ‘Long Island Iced’ tea with milk and sugar rather than rum and a cocktail umbrella, then sticking with the basic cruise fare will be better for you. The best way to see if you are getting value for money is to work out the daily rate and calculating what you think you would typically spend each day of your holiday, including accommodation, food, and beverages.

If you plan your cruise carefully, it’s possible not spend anything extra on top of the price of your cruise ticket.

What to expect on a cruise?

Our cruise concierge listen to your needs and help you find the right cruise tailored to your preferences!

The restaurants on-board every ship are second to none and offer a huge variety of mouth-watering cuisines, often from celebrity chefs. No matter what you can be sure the expectation VS reality is true to life when it comes to dining on a cruise holiday.

Your first cruise holiday

Seeing your cruise ship at the port for the first time can blow your mind and you’ll know this is the start of an incredible holiday. The embarking process can feel overwhelming, but it is generally well organised, the key is to have all your boarding documents and identification to hand to make it as straight forward as possible.

When you arrive at the cruise terminal, porters are available to take your large suitcases and deliver these to your cabin ready for you. Make sure you have anything you might need access to, such as cameras and medication, in your hand luggage. You will be shown to your cabin and given information about the ship, most cruise ships have apps available with plenty of handy features like booking dinner reservations and excursions, organising, and viewing your itinerary, along with convenient interactive maps, these all make life on-board much simpler.

You will soon become accustomed to life on-board and making the most of the activities available, facilities, swimming pools and restaurants. You should also be familiar with the itinerary, ports, and excursions available. There is always someone on hand to help you and each ship has a Concierge Desk on-board available any time of day and night.

What happens at the end of your cruise?

Much like the embarking process, disembarkation day can feel overwhelming, however it is well organised. Make sure you have all your documentation and identification to hand. Just like any holiday, you will be required to ‘check out’ and settle any outstanding payments, it might be easier to do this the night before so there is no waiting around on your last day.

Prior to your holiday you will have organised your return transfers, whether these will be taking you to the airport, post-cruise hotels or area attractions to combine a city tour with an airport transfer. Port staff will be around to help and can direct you to where you need to be.

Booking another cruise

More often than not, cruise lines offer exclusive deals or benefits when you rebook while on-board. This is particularly useful if you know what you want, allowing you to set a date for your diary and save you money at the same time.

Keep an eye out for emails from your cruise concierge, who will likely offer you discounted rates for booking with them again.

When booking your cruise, preparation and research is key – even if you’re looking at cruising next month. Browse our range of fantastic cruise deals for this year and next, depending on when you’re looking to step on-board and speak to our expert concierge team today!
