  • Southampton

    25 August 2019

The port of Southampton can trace its origins back to a Roman settlement on the banks of the River Itchen where Bitterne stands today. However, the Saxon settlement of Hamwic or Hamtun on the opposite shore of the Itchen is where Southampton’s early identity really starts to take shape. Unfortunately the wealth of this fledgling Saxon port attracted the attentions of Viking raiders who were, to say the least, bad for business. However, the die had been cast and Southampton traded through good times and bad until, by the early 19th century, paddle steamers started running regular services to France. A century and a half later the first car ferries plied the same routes helping to further popularise the idea of foreign leisure travel that the White Star liners and the glamorous Southampton built flying boats had helped to pioneered. Although the great liners were literally overtaken by the era of cheap jet travel, they never entirely disappeared and, gradually, modern cruising started to become more accessible and more popular. Today Southampton has three cruise terminals to copy with the unprecedented comings and goings of today’s massive cruise ships.

  • Top Of The Rock Observation Deck

    02 September 2019

Embark on a 70 year journey through time at New York's most elegant, state of the art observation deck. Top of the Rock, is an experience in history and scenery that culminates with the best views of New York City from the newly renovated, 3-tiered observation deck at the summit of 30 Rockefeller Plaza. The 70 story-high perch was originally opened more than 70 years ago by John D Rockefeller to give something back to New Yorkers and their guests from around the world - a place to appreciate and celebrate their city. First opened in 1933, the deck boasted 360-degree unobstructed views from 850 feet (259m) and an open-air simplicity unmatched by any other building. Its distinctive design was inspired by the great ocean liners of the era - complete with deck chairs, gooseneck fixtures and vents that resembled a ship's stacks. Now, for the first time in 20 years, this breathtaking vantage point is re-opening to the people of New York City and the world.
