Abu Dhabi is the capital and Federal capital of the United Arab Emirates. It is home to ultra-luxurious hotels, endless shopping malls and widespread entertainment facilities. Along with its year-round sunshine, stunning beaches and sand dunes, it's not hard to see why Abu Dhabi is a popular port of call. Although a modern city island, you'll discover a place that's rich in history too. Historical locations include the watchtowers; originally built to warn inhabitants of approaching bandits and the ‘Heritage Village' which is a reconstruction of a traditional oasis village. Whilst you're here, check out one of the world's largest mosques. An architectural work of art, it can hold 40,000 worshippers at any one time. Featuring 80 domes, 24-carat gold-plated chandeliers and the world's largest hand-woven carpet, the mosque is absolutely stunning.
If you're after hitting Abu Dhabi's well known stores, head to one of the many malls, such as the 'Fotouh Al Khair Centre'. Gold is a popular purchase in Abu Dhabi. Priced according to the international daily gold rate, it's available in 18, 21, 22 or 24 carats. Chocolate made from camels' milk is another luxurious treat in Abu Dhabi. You'll find the chocolate in many souvenir shops.
The local currency is the Dirham. Abu Dhabi is 3 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT +3).
