Alghero is a picturesque port that is situated along Sardinia's northern coast. With its unspoiled coastline, secluded bays and small inlets surrounded by pine forests, Alghero looks as though it's just been plucked from the prettiest postcard. Lending such a magical feel to the isle, the historical sites include the historic Catalan church, which features a ceramic dome and Gothic bell tower. Another popular attraction is the ‘Magdelena fort', which proudly watches over the charming cobbled streets of the atmospheric old town. And, situated approximately 10 kilometres from Alghero, is the intriguing prehistoric site of Nuraghe Palmavera with its 50 circular stone cottage-like buildings. Alghero is also blessed with the long white sand beach ‘Maria Pia' just in case you wanted to spend a few hours relaxing.
Alghero's bustling centre is home to an abundance of shops - and many sell products which have been made locally. As Sardinia's northwest coast is famous for corals - they're available to buy in most of the shops in Alghero. The locally produced red wine, 'Cannonau Riserva' is another popular purchase.
The local currency is the Euro. Alghero's is 1 hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT+1).
