A coastal town in the far south of Jordan, Aqaba is Jordan's window onto the Red Sea. A delightful port of call, Aqaba is blessed with glistening sand, crystal clear waters and awe-inspiring scenery. It is also a place rich in history too - there's the ‘Aqaba Fort' and remains believed to be the world's oldest church. Another place more than worthy of a visit is the ‘Aqaba Museum', which displays an important collection of Islamic items - dating from the 7th to 12th centuries. Close to the ancient city of Petra (120 km) and the magnificent desert Wadi Rum (50 km), the port of Aquaba acts as the gateway to these enchanting places too. Blessed with sandy beaches shaded by palm trees, crystal clear waters and a year round tropical climate, Aqaba's beaches offer the perfect place to relax, swim and sunbathe.
Most shops in Aqaba open at 9am or 10am - and don't close until 11pm. Popular purchases include Bedouin jewellery and colourful sand art. A duty-free zone, you can expect great deals on electronics, perfume, alcohol and jewellery too.
The local currency is the Jordanian dinar. Jordan is 2 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT +2).
