Famous for its beaches, hilly towns and fine food, Bari is an increasingly popular tourist destination. Divided into two parts, Bari has a modern area called ""quarters"", which was developed in 1820 and the ancient district which is located on a peninsula to the north. It is here that you'll find magnificent Romanesque-style architecture, including the eleventh-century ‘Basilica di San Nicola'. Dedicated to St. Nicholas - also known as Santa Claus - it was specially built to house his remains. The saint's body is supposed to give out a kind of holy oil - and you can actually buy bottles of this extraordinary liquid in the church shop next door. Other places worth visiting include the ‘Bari Cathedral' and 'Bari's Archaeological Museum'. From its modern city to its ancient district, Bari has a little touch of everything.
If you're after souvenirs, check out 'Vecchia Bari' - near to 'Basilica di San Nicola' – you'll find lots of little souvenir shops. Or to go shopping for international brands head to the streets of 'Corso Vittorio Emanuele' / 'Via Sparano'.
The local currency is the Euro. Bari is 1 hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT+1).
