Spain's biggest port and sixth largest city, Bilbao is situated in the Basque region of northern Spain. Home to one of Europe's finest and most unusual landmarks, the ‘Guggenheim Museum' is a striking piece of architecture, featuring the works of some of the most famous artists of the 20th century -- including Picasso, Robert Motherwell and Robert Rauschenberg. James Bond fans may recognise the building from the 1999 film ‘The World Is Not Enough'. As well as this unique museum, there are several others well worth a visit, including ‘La Ría Maritime Museum' and the 'Basque Museum'. As you can tell, Bilbao is the perfect destination for history and art lovers. Offering something for all tastes, Bilbao boasts a superb selection of restaurants and shops too.
There are two main shopping areas in Bilbao - both located in the Old Quarter. 'BilbaoCentro' is where you'll find a number of department stores and small boutiques. To pick up traditional Basque items, be sure to have a wander through the 'Handicrafts Market' – it's located at 'El Arenal' in the 'Old Quarter'. You'll find a wide variety of Basque crafts here including pottery, crystals and leather products.
The local currency is the Euro. Bilbao is 1 hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT+1).
