A city and port in south-western Spain, Cadiz is thought to be the oldest city in Europe. Almost completed surrounded by water, Cadiz has a 'private island' feel. And, according to Greek legend, the city was founded by Greek demigod Heracles. One of the finest attractions in Cadiz has got to be the beaches. Consisting of wide stretches of golden sand, they seem to go on forever. La Playa de la Caleta is the most famous beach here. Situated between two castles San Sebastian and Santa Catalina, the beach is so stunning that it actually featured in the James Bond movie Die Another Day. Cadiz's well preserved historical landmarks are definitely worth a visit. A good place for you to start is at the tourist information office in the Plaza San Juan de Dios. Here you can pick up some excellent guides to all the major places of interest, such as the impressive 18th century cathedral. Housing a priceless collection of religious treasures along with gold, silver and jewellery brought from the New World in the wake of Columbus' voyages of discovery, the Cathedral should definitely be on your ‘to do' list.
Souvenirs can be found at several shops in Calle Pelota, Calle Compañía, Calle San Francisco and Plaza de Candelaria. In the morning, the bustling Central Market sells a wide range of products including food, clothing and crafts.
The local currency is the Euro. Cadiz is 1 hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT+1).
