A city on the French island of Corsica, Calvi has an array of colourful buildings, charming cobbled streets and stretches of white sand. It's the picture perfect setting. As your cruise ship pulls into Calvi's picturesque harbour, you'll be greeted by the 15th century citadel. Just as impressive on the inside as it is on the outside, Calvi's citadel is a fascinating place. Once you pass through its ancient gateway, you'll discover narrow passages, 13th-century houses and the legendary ‘Saint Jean-Baptiste Cathedral', which is home to beautiful works of art. And, Christopher Columbus's home was in Calvi. Although it was nearly completely demolished by Nelson's troops back in 1794, the ruins are still worth checking out. With its glistening white sand and crystal clear water, Calvi's beach is perfect for windsurfing, water skiing, jet skiing and paragliding. If you prefer a quiet place to recline head to the beach at Plage de l'Alga, near Revellata point.
A variety of Corsican products are sold in the town, including cheese, honey and wine. The Balagne region - in which Calvi is situated - bottles its own olive oil, which is available to buy throughout Calvi.
The local currency is the Euro. Corsica is 1 hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT+1).
