Chios, Greece Cruises

The fifth largest of the Greek islands, Chios is blessed with the most stunning scenery and beaches. There are many good places to visit too, including the fascinating medieval villages. And, once you're in Chios, you'll notice that it's the island's medieval character that stands out the most. One of the island's major attractions is the World Heritage listed Monastery of Nea Moni. Built in the 11th century, you'll discover this monastery high up in the mountains - 15 kilometres west of the capital. A Byzantine building, the collection of well-preserved mosaics here are among the finest in Greece. The Archaeological Museum is also worth checking out.

You'll come across a lot of shops in Chios town - in the area between Port of Chios, Vounakiou Square, Aplotarias Street and Korais Street. There are many gift/souvenir shops at Chios Port (Aegeou Avenue) and Venizelou Street - and they're open all day long. Popular purchases include traditional sweets and products made using Mastic (a plant resin, which is bursting with benefits).

The local currency is the Euro. Chios is 2 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT +2).
