The second largest city in Panama, Colon was founded by the Americans who worked on building the Panama railroad back in 1850. A popular port of call, Colon's just an hour's drive from Panama's main historical attractions, so you can visit sites like the ‘Panama Railroad'; which will take you from the Atlantic Coast to the Pacific Coast in just two hours. You may also want to watch one of the world's greatest accomplishments of engineering - the Panama Canal - in action. If you prefer spending a few hours relaxing on the beach then the closest one is 'María Chiquita beach'.
The Colon Free Zone is the world's largest free trade zone. Electronics, clothing and cosmetics are popular purchases here. When it comes to crafts, novel wooden boxes - shaped as fish, flowers, birds and other animals -make wonderful souvenirs/gifts.
The local currency is the Balboa. Colon is 6 hours behind Greenwich Mean Time (GMT -5 hours).
