Meaning “little place with steep mountains”, Flaam is situated on Aurlandsfjord, the innermost part of the world's second longest fjord, Sognefjord. With its snow-capped mountains, wild waterfalls, meadows and mountain farms, it comes as no surprise that it's included on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Popular attractions include the ‘Flaam Railway', which is considered one of the world's most enchanting train journeys and ‘Naeroyfjord', Europe's narrowest fjord. Surrounded by cliffs nearly 6,000 feet high and cascading waterfalls, seals, porpoises and eagles are often spotted in Naeroyfjord too.
There are a handful of shops selling local souvenirs and traditional items in Flaam. Popular purchases include knitted sweaters, pewter beer mugs and items decorated with floral motifs and trolls. The ‘Flaam Railway Museum' also has a small shop where you can buy Flaam Railway souvenirs.
The local currency in Flaam is the Norwegian krone (NOK). Flaam is 1 hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT +1).
