Gdansk is a city steeped in history. It was established over a thousand years ago, and it was left in ruins following the Second World War. Yet the resilience of the city shines on, with many a monument dedicated to the ancient foundations of the city, the war, and the more recent history with the rebellions against communism. It’s also one of the amber centres of the world, with the tree resin used to crafts fine local jewellery as well as being included in folk medicines for hundreds of years. Head to the Old Town if you want to browse the range of amber jewellery available today.
The UNESCO site of Malbork Castle is truly impressive, with its medieval design offering amazing views over the river Nogat. Head to Solidarity Square at the shipyards to find out more about the 1970s strike that led to the downfall of the Communist regime. And if you want to get out of the city, you can head to Sopot, a charming resort town on the seaside and home to Europe’s longest wooden pier as well as The Crooked House.
The currency in Gdansk is the Polish Zloty. Gdansk is 2 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT +2).
