Kochi is a city steeped in history, offering a fascinating insight into Japan’s political ancestry. It was formed with the building of Kochi Castle in the early 17th century, a reward for the local warrior who supported Tokugawa Ieyasu in his bid to become Shogun. The Castle had to be rebuilt in the mid-18th century following a fire, and is now one of just 12 Japanese castles to survive to this day, giving visitors a chance to experience this classical architecture first-hand. The castle has its own Museum of History, with an incredible collection of over 67,000 items that detail the treasures and cultures of the region.
There are many natural wonders around Kochi too, including Mikurodo Cave where it’s believed an 8th century Buddhist monk achieved spiritual enlightenment. You can take a stroll over the exhilarating Kazurabashi Bridge, made from woven vines across a valley that’s 45 feet above the river below. And don’t miss Ryugado Cave, a designated National Treasure. Its limestone features were once home to early man, with primitive housings and spectacular waterfalls to explore.
The currency in Kochi is the Yen. Kochi is 9 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT +9).
