A port of call on many Caribbean cruises, Antigua is a delightful island in the West Indies. With its shimmering white, palm-fringed sands and tranquil turquoise waters, it's a little slice of paradise on earth. One of the premier tourist destinations in the Caribbean, there are many tourist hot spots here, including ‘Nelson's Dockyard'. Situated in the English Harbour, the dockyard pays tribute to Antigua's past as a Royal Navy base. And, journey a little further up the hill and you'll discover ‘Shirley Heights'. The ruins of the former lookout fort of the Royal Navy, the most stunning views can be had from here too. Antigua has 365 stunning beaches ('one for each day of the year' say the Antiguans). There's a beach to suit everyone. The beach closest to St John's is at Fort Bay, near Fort James.
St John is famous for its various shopping malls and boutiques, which sell designer jewellery and haute-couture clothing. At ‘Heritage' and ‘Redcliffe' quays there are a number of charming shops where you can find clothing and handcrafted souvenirs. Be sure to stop by the ‘Sarah Fuller Pottery Stand' on ‘Redcliffe Quay' for a selection of handmade ceramics. If you're here on a Friday or Saturday morning, check out the ‘Farmers Market' this is where you'll find local crafts and fresh produce.
The local currency is the Eastern Caribbean Dollar (E.C.). Antigua is 4 hours behind Greenwich meantime (GMT -4).
