Smaller and quieter than its neighbour Mallorca, Minorca - also spelt Menorca - is the second largest of the Balearic Islands. And, it has almost as many beaches as Mallorca and Ibiza – put together! The capital of Menorca, Mahon, is an important port for the whole country – it serves many cruise ships and regular ferryboats. Established under the Roman rule as the leading port of the time, Mahon was later on revived by the British and turned into the flourishing city and port that it is today. Located in the eastern part of the island, Mahon also has the second deepest natural harbour in the world.
Most of the shopping in Mahon is along the pedestrian streets. Here you'll discover boutiques and shops selling various products such as leather and pottery. If you want to check out Mahon's bustling markets, head to the market building. But, make sure you get there early, as they tend to finish around noon.
The local currency is the Euro. Mahon is 1 hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT+1).
