Milford Sound is a fjord situated in the south west of New Zealand's South Island. With its cascading waterfalls, lush forests and seals, dolphins and penguins, it's a truly amazing place to visit. Full of places to explore… take a walk along the coast surrounding the steep rocks - the most breath taking views can be had from here. If you're a keen hiker, you'll more than enjoy a walk to Chasm; a 22 metre deep rock formation which was created by waterfalls. 'Sutherland Falls' is well worth the hike too. At nearly 2,000 feet high, they're the fifth highest falls in the world. To get the most amazing views of Milford Sound's black coral and underwater life, head to the 'Underwater Observatory'. A place bursting with activities, water sports are popular here too, canoeing in particular. To see adorable fur seals, crested penguins and bottle-nose dolphins, opt for one of the popular kayaking trips.
The best souvenirs here include seashells and shell jewellery native to the region and souvenir shops also sell locally inspired art. Milford Sound however is not a shopping port and the main focus is on the sheer beauty that surrounds you.
Milford Sound's local currency is the New Zealand dollar (NZD). Milford Sound is 12 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT +12).
