The largest of the Balearic Islands, the name Majorca comes from the Latin word ‘insula maior' - which means the ‘larger island'. Renowned for its beautiful white sand and crystal water beaches, Majorca continues to be a firm favourite with nationalities all over the world. The capital of Majorca, Palma, is a popular port of call. Famous for its stunning sunsets, in Palma you'll discover architectural wonders, including the 'Palma Cathedral', which proudly looks over the old town. A striking building, it's most likely to be the first building you'll notice as you enter the harbour. Another Palma highlight is 'Bellver castle'. Constructed in 1300 AD, the castle is also used for cultural activities such as programs of classical music.
Palma's locally made handicraft is made from the wood of the olive tree – it's the perfect souvenir. As well as these wooden handicrafts, other popular purchases include leather goods, ceramics, local confectionary and Majorca pearls.
The local currency is the Euro. Majorca is 1 hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT+1).
