Philipsburg is the capital of Saint Maarten, the Dutch side of the Caribbean Island Saint Martin. The island's capital town, situated in the south, is a gateway to idyllic beaches, tropical forests and luxury destinations, where indulgence is the name of the game. Sip cocktails on the sand, swim amongst the rays in clear cool waters, or enjoy live music performances and authentic Caribbean dishes in a restaurant or open-air beach bar.
As you set foot on the warm ground in Philipsburg, you enter a world in which you can escape. Many visitors choose to avoid long walks and visitor attractions, instead favouring rest and relaxation with a chance to top up their tan. If you're not the type to stay still, this island presents a wealth of opportunities for watersports and thrilling speedboat rides. The island of St Martin experienced the full force of Hurricane Irma, but has not taken long to be restored to its former beauty and to welcome visitors back with open arms.
US Dollars are widely accepted in Philipsburg and across St Martin. The local currency is the Guilder, and the Euro is also accepted on the French side of the island but not in Philipsburg itself, which lies on the Dutch side. Your best choice is to use US Dollars during your visit, widely accepted throughout the island. St Martin is 5 hours behind Greenwich Mean Time (GMT –5).
