MS Finnmarken

Designed with exploration in mind, MS Finnmarken is aimed at travellers who put the destination at the heart of their holiday. On-board you won’t find glitzy entertainment or a huge range of leisure facilities, but your attentive crew will do everything to ensure a high standard of service.

There’s a main dining room with a relaxed atmosphere and a 24-hour café serving snacks, while a selection of bars and lounges serve as the ideal backdrop to swap travel stories with other guests. There is a small pool and fitness room on-board when you do want to get a little active.

Dining

Dining is quite a delight on-board MS Finnmarken, with the main dining seating up to 335 and offering a buffet-style breakfast and lunch, as well as a set-menu affair for dinner. This venue offers a whole host of mouth-watering dishes, boasting large windows enabling you to enjoy a tasty meal whilst looking out to sea. Hurtigruten boasts one of the first vegan menus at sea, boasting an inventive and tasty selection of dishes from breakfast right through to dinner. There is also the 24-hour Morestuen Café, offering sandwiches and light snacks; Babettes Café for sweet treats and speciality hot drinks; and a further al la carte restaurant to enjoy dining on-board.

Accommodation

There are four categories of stateroom on-board MS Finnmarken, including Polar Inside, Polar Outside, Arctic Superior and Expedition Suite. The cabins are simple, yet still offer everything needed for the perfect stay. You’ll find a comfortable bed, wardrobe area, television, sitting area and an en-suite bathroom. The suites on-board are beautifully decorated and offer more space, with larger beds, ocean views, a television, a lounge area and en-suite bathroom with plenty of amenities.

Activities

MS Finnmarken is the only Hurtigruten ship which has a swimming pool on-board, so make sure you make the most of it! There is also a Jacuzzi area to relax in while you enjoy the views of passing ports. There is also a fitness room offering exercise machines for those active cruisers. Visit the Fiinstuen club room for a spot of light reading and a chance to play board games with family and friends.

Whilst children are welcome on-board the Hurtigruten fleet they are tailored towards the mature traveller so it is unusual for children to be on-board however there is an arcade room and a playroom for the younger people.

Entertainment

Unlike other cruise lines, Hurtigruten doesn’t offer dazzling entertainment shows and cabaret acts. Instead, the sailing is all about the destinations you are about to discover. In the evenings, a favourite pastime of many is spending time to discuss and reflect on the incredible sights that have been witnessed in the daytime with fellow passengers. The Brotoppen Lounge at the top of the ship is perfect for this, boasting comfortable seats and panoramic views out to sea. On some evenings you can also find live music and dancing in Fløybaren Bar.

MS Finnmarken Reviews

I had wanted to do this cruise since Art College in the seventies when these ships were the Norwegian postal ships it was very much the Joanna Lumley hippie style crossed with Absolutely Fabulous moments that my friend and I had in mind. The Finnmarken is one of the smaller ships however like most of these ships she is a cross between a car ferry and a cruise ship built ten years ago she is now one of the smaller ships. The cabins were very comfortable with a settee converting to the second twin bed as in most other cabins and it was pristine as you would expect with Scandinavia. The sailing was a Classis round voyage up to Kirkenes and back to Bergen thus seeing the best of the coast in each direction although if I was just able to do half the journey North would be best . The inclusive nature of the Classic Round Voyages with Full board are best value as lunch is over £20 on the half board options. Breakfast and lunch are buffet style and have a wide choice of fresh food however the dinner is a set menu alcohol is expensive as anticipated so a stop at the duty free in Heathrow was a must. There was also a tea and coffee package which you could pre pay which was good value. The Northern lights were beautiful although not as spectacular as the photos very hazy and colourful though. The husky run was great fun and even though we were so tired it was worth every moment and one of those trips that you must not miss.

MS Finnmarken is such a remarkable ship and we had a truly wonderful experience. The scenery was excellent and we are so glad we decided to visit Norway with Hurtigruten.

We did look at more traditional cruise ships, but decided to opt for this sailing due to the amount of ports it visited and after sharing our experience with friends, it seems we certainly made the right choice.

All the staff were incredibly friendly and had such outstanding local knowledge. We may be interested in some other sailings with them now, maybe a little more adventurous this time, but we would highly recommend them to any of our friends and family.
