MS Nordlys

Named for the Northern Lights, MS Nordlys takes this natural phenomenon as its inspiration with artworks and décor reflecting the breath-taking views. Guests are encouraged to unwind in the panoramic lounges and bars, exchanging travel stories and soaking up the magnificent scenery as the ship travels.

The main restaurant is informal and relaxed, serving locally-sourced produce, while the café is available 24 hours a day for snacks and lighter bites. There’s a small fitness room and sauna, as well as a playroom for any families who wish to travel on-board. There is occasional live music in the bars on some evenings too.

MS Nordlys is due to be refurbished in May 2019, when the cruise line is planning on adding new cabin grades for more choice when booking.

  • Launched: 01 Jan 1994

dining Nordlys

Dining

Dining certainly is an exciting affair aboard MS Nordlys, as the chefs source all the produce locally, to ensure that you only get the best dining experience possible. Hurtigruten boasts one of the first vegan menus at sea, boasting an inventive and tasty selection of dishes from breakfast right through to dinner. You will find that the main dining room, Stjernesalen, is the place to enjoy breakfast and lunch in a buffet-style setting and dinner is a sit-down affair. There is an alternative place to eat at the on-board café, Aurora, where you can enjoy tasty snacks, tea and coffee. You can also visit the additional A la carte restaurant for a more formal dining venue.

Activities Nordlys

Activities

Enjoy the company of the ship’s expedition team on-board MS Nordlys, who offer lectures, presentations and activities on-board for an exciting and educational journey. Each sailing offers a different topic or focus, depending on the regions visited, with the team arranging programmes throughout the day and night for you to enjoy. Alternatively, visit the fitness room and sauna for an active afternoon, or pick up a new read in the on-board library.

Hurtigruten does not allow children under five to travel to Antarctica, with no other age restrictions elsewhere. MS Nordlys does offer a children’s play area but not much else for younger audiences, so bear this in mind if you’re looking to travel with family.

Entertainment Nordlys

Entertainment

When it comes to entertainment you won’t find a grand affair like on most cruise ships. However, what you will find is like-minded passengers willing to sit back and relax, whilst reflecting on the days exciting events. MS Nordlys Reviews

Hello, we have travelled on this ship to see the Northern Lights. Apparently the ships name means Northern Lights and the décor is based on this, with light interiors and a contemporary feel.

We had a nice Outside cabin with a porthole (balconies not needed!) and did a lovely 7 day itinerary to see the lights.

We were lucky enough to see them even though the weather had been quite bad.

On board there is a sun deck (great in summer but not so good in march), an observation lounge to sit and while away time and look at the scenery and the Panorama lounge where there is some low key entertainment and talks held.

The food was mostly buffet style and extremely good, lots of fresh fish/chicken etc, they catered for vegetarians very well also. Overall, a lovely experience on a relaxed feeling ship, not dressy but still good standard

We cruise annually with Hurtigruten and this year was no exception, we have cruised before on the Nordlys, and we it was a nice surprise to have the same cabin steward, and waiter this year too – the service was impeccable and the ship has a very traditional and homely feel. We felt very comfortable onboard and really enjoyed our Northern Lights itinerary. We are looking forward to another cruise with them soon! Thanks for a great voyage!
