While sun-bathing is always encouraged on the beaches that stretch along the Bahamas’ sun-soaked coastline, visitors will always find an array of water sports and coastal activities to enjoy, including kite boarding, kayaking, snorkelling and scuba diving. Travellers could also opt for a sailboat tour of the islands, a deep sea fishing trip, wild dolphin excursion or even shark caging diving experiences.

Those looking for a unique experience in the Bahamas should time their next arrival on the islands to coincide which the biggest event in the local calendar – the Junkanoo festival. This exciting celebration is held on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day each year, with festivities often concentrated around Nassau, and sees local people take to the streets wearing colourful costumes and revelling in the sounds of characteristic Junkanoo music.

Caribbean cruises are particularly popular during the winter months, so if you plan on taking a cruise over Christmas and New Year, then the Bahamas is one of the most exciting places to be at this marvellous time of the year.

While shopping at a local Bahaman market is a fun and unique way to spend a day, if the prices you see seem too good to be true – they probably are! Beware of purchasing counterfeit goods whilst browsing local markets, especially when it comes to Cuban cigars and tobacco products.
