Guide to Themed Cruises

Do you have a dream cruise? For many, this includes certain destinations or maybe a particular ship. For some, this may even include a particular theme that allows them to enjoy their favourite hobby on-board and mix with likeminded people. Enter, themed cruises. A perfect option for a trip with a twist.

What is a Themed Cruise?

Themed cruises are voyages focussed on a particular interest, celebration, time of year, genre of music or group of people. On a full ship charter themed cruise, everyone on-board partakes in the theme.

What to Pack for a Themed Cruise

With such a vast range of themed sailings, what you pack for each can vary massively. However, there are some staples:

  • Costumes: Whether it’s 70’s disco attire or enrichment-focused, lots of themed cruises can come with their own rather unique dress code.
  • Equipment: If you’re heading on a cruise based around a specific hobby, you may need to bring any special equipment with you. Some themed cruises will provide all necessary equipment on-board, so just check beforehand.

What Time of Year is Best for a Themed Cruise?

Themed cruises occur all year round, although some are tied to a specific time of year. For example, Pride cruises only occur in the month of June, Grand Prix cruises take place in late May, and many themed sailings are centred around different national or international annual celebrations.

What to Expect From a Themed Cruise

On a themed cruise, you can expect to meet like-minded people, partake in a variety of themed activities, and have a lot of fun.

With a fabulous variety of themed cruises out there, you’re bound to find one that piques your interest. Here are some of the best-themed cruises available.

Celebrity Cruises

Think the 1970s were the greatest decade of all time? Well, then Celebrity Cruises has a range of voyages for you, including the 70’s Rock and Romance Cruise, the Ultimate Disco Cruise, and the Flower Power cruise.

Not too keen on the 70’s nostalgia? Don’t worry; Celebrity Cruises has many other themed sailings for you to enjoy. Why not take to the sea on Cruise with Friends- a voyage themed around the iconic ’90s sitcom.

Celebrity Cruises also offers a selection of themed sailings geared towards the LGBTQIA+ community. Attend Celebrity’s annual Pride Party at Sea or embark on a Vacaya LGBTQIA+ Caribbean cruise.

Cunard

Are you the kind of person who always has their nose in a book? You’ll adore Cunard’s annual Literature Festival at Sea, with literary lectures and workshops galore. Or perhaps you’re a fashionista hoping to strut your stuff and serve some looks? If so, Cunard’s fashion week is the cruise for you. And if you’re forever singing along to west-end tunes, your place is on-board Cunard’s London Theatres at Sea cruise, starring Olivier-winning talent.

Whilst a cruise ship may be a tad different to a yellow submarine, you’ll still have an amazing time on a Beatles and Beyond voyage, with sensational performances from the “Bootleg Beatles” tribute band. Other fantastic musical cruise offerings from Cunard include Jazz at Sea and a sailing with Anthony Inglis and the National Symphony Orchestra.

Let your creativity loose on one of the Queen Mary 2’s Art and Design weeks, where you will be inspired by the stunning art deco aesthetic of the ship itself. Or perhaps you’d rather be footloose and fancy free on a Dance the Atlantic cruise.

Foodies and horticulturalists alike will find their perfect cruises among Cunard’s Australia sailings, which include the Great Australian Culinary Voyage and Australia’s Gardening Journey.

Royal Caribbean

If Sci-Fi is your area of interest, try Navigator of the Seas’ Star Trek the Cruise to live long and prosper. Or perhaps you’d rather relive the decade of Madonna and Duran Duran on Mariner of the Seas’ 80’s cruise.

For a dance music festival at sea, try the Groove Cruise. Or enjoy the music of the Caribbean whilst sailing around it on the Jamrock Reggae Cruise. Or maybe you’d like a music cruise where you can celebrate your faith, if so, the K-love Christian music is for you.

Norwegian Cruise Line

Put on your best black and white make up and head-bang along to “I Was Made for Lovin’ You” on the Kiss Cruise from LA to Mexico. Or perhaps you’d rather board Chris Jericho’s Rock ‘N’ Wrestling Rager at Sea to watch WWE fights and attend musical performances as you sail to Great Stirrup Cay.

MSC Cruises

For those ghoulish folks who wish it could be Halloween all year round, MSC’s Annual Gothic Cruise and Masquerade Ball is a fabulous opportunity to channel your inner Dracula whilst dancing at the “spookeasy” formal night.

If you’re looking to take in some culture on-board, set sail on the Oppiwater Arts Festival at Sea for spellbinding performances and excellent exhibitions.

Are you a party animal? Dance to beats from top DJs on an Oh Ship party cruise or maybe you are interested in a Beer Festival? Fun-packed festive celebrations with a Bavarian flair – decorations, costumes, games, music and of course beer. There’s even a Master of Beer competition and a 6-metre-tall inflatable beer mug.

Holland America Line

Pack your best vintage dress or retro leather jacket for the Malt Shop Memories 1950’s cruise with a prom night, sock hop, and hosted gameshows. Or perhaps you’d rather celebrate the music and cultures of the Emerald Isle? Then take the All-Star Irish cruise and ceilidh the night away.

Do you jam to Prince, Marvin Gaye, and Aretha Franklin in your spare time? Chances are you’ll have a brilliant time on the Soul Train Cruise. Connoisseurs looking to tantalise their tastebuds, on the other hand, should board a Food and Beverage Aficionado Cruse.

Disney Cruises

Technically all Disney cruises are themed cruises, giving you the opportunity to meet your favourite characters on-board, and partake in activities based around iconic Disney movies.

However, some select Disney sailings offer even more specific themes. On certain voyages you could experience Pixar Day at Sea, Star Wars Day at Sea, and even Marvel Day at Sea!

Disney cruise line also has Halloween and Christmas themed cruises which run in line with the seasons. These cruises provide guests with rare character meet and greets, themed shows and decor throughout the ship and fun seasonal activities for everyone to enjoy!

Fred Olsen Cruises

Fred Olsen Cruises offer some wonderful, themed sailings centred around the celebrations and significant days of the ports you visit. For example, the Fredericia Festivities Cruise focusses on the sixth of July anniversary of the Danish military victory at the Battle of Fredericia. The German Cities with Kiel Week Regatta Cruise is themed around the Kieler Woche sailing festival. And the Canaries and Portugal with Funchal Flower Parade cruise visits an array of botanically themed ports, including Funchal at the time of the annual flower festival.

On top of all this, Fred Olsen also offers a fascinating and informative Viking Heritage Cruise around Scandinavia.
