Spotlight on Alaska

Experience the glaciers, wildlife and history of Alaska with a cruise holiday that showcases the beautiful natural wonders of America’s largest state.

This epic destination is home to some of the world’s best natural sights, glaciers bigger than US states, mountains with skyscraper peaks and all creatures great and small. Alaska is a place to pursue dreams, whether it be seeing a brown bear up-close, watching whales migrate for the spring or spotting the Northern Lights dance across the mountaintops. It’s the perfect place to include a rail experience aboard the iconic Rocky Mountaineer, for a chance to see this part of the world from two perspectives: the coastlines of Alaska unlike any other, alongside the natural beauty of the Canadian Rockies.

Travelling throughout the seasons offers different experiences and, depending on what you’re planning, depends on the season that is best for you. Summer draws the most crowds as this is the warmest time for Alaska and offers the most daylight – perfect for wildlife viewing and seeing flowers in full bloom.

If you’re looking to spot the northern lights, wintertime is prime viewing with longer days and dark skies to spot these incredible spectrums dance across the sky. Plus, you can enjoy dog sledding, snowmobiling and skiing as the snow conditions are ideal!

Meanwhile, spring brings whales to the coastline of Anchorage, amongst other marine species, and you could also witness bears come out of their dens and moose calves being born. There’s also chance you can still spot the northern lights, as viewing is still possible in the evenings through until April.

Our experiences!

“When I shared news of my upcoming Alaska & Rocky Mountaineer holiday earlier this year, everyone told me GoldLeaf is the only way to experience Rocky Mountaineer and they were right! Panoramic views with full glass dome windows, superior food, drink and service all synonymous with the brand is a truly spectacular way to travel through the Canadian Rockies and witness the truly breath-taking scenery (which pictures do not do justice to)! It was a fabulous and unique experience, made all the more incredible alongside an Alaskan cruise from Vancouver.

My highlights would have to include trying the crab and lobster at the Vancouver Fish Company, as well as staying at the Fairmont Hotel here for a great location in central downtown. Also, book your excursion to the Hubbard Glacier as soon as you can as this is the only way to get up close to this fascinating feat of nature that is even more incredible during this intimate experience. As for wildlife lovers, don’t miss whale watching and bear spotting in Ketchikan, perfect when visiting between May and September months.”

Juneau, Alaska

Cruise to Juneau, Alaska and visit the most remote, most beautiful and strangest state capital in the United States. Surrounded by water, forest and mountain sights, visitors seeking things to do in Juneau indoors and outdoors can hike a glacier, eat fresh-caught fish on a seaside patio and tour a grand capitol building all in one day.

Skagway's inspiring natural landscape

Skagway Alaska

In Skagway, at every turn you’ll find yourself immersed in gold rush lore, from the infamous Red Onion Saloon that still keeps a pistol that Wyatt Earp left behind enroute to the Klondike, to the White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad, a classic narrow-gauge railway that traverses rugged mountains and passes cascading waterfalls and towering glaciers

Glacier Bay

Frosted peaks towering over mossy forests, wide tidewater glaciers (there are seven in the park), and marine wildlife are givens on Glacier Bay cruises, but every experience in this changing biosphere is unique.

Colourful buildings bordering the water in Ketchikan in Alaska

Ketchikan, Alaska

Ketchikan has long been an important hub of the salmon-fishing and -packing industries. Visitors can try their luck on a sportfishing or simply savour the fresh seafood at one of the local restaurants on a cruise to Ketchikan excursion.
