If you’re over 55 and considering a cruise, you’ll likely be interested to know of the deals and discounts that are available for senior citizens.

Best cruise line senior discounts

Each cruise line has a different policy when it comes to discounting for older travellers. The cruise lines which are currently offering discounts for senior citizens are:

The amount of discount varies and isn’t usually published. So if you find a cruise that you like, call our cruise concierge team on 0808 1234 118 and we’ll check what discounts the cruise line will offer you.

How old do you need to be to get a senior citizen rate on your cruise?

In the cruise industry, a senior citizen is generally defined as some who is at least 55 years old. So whilst you may not qualify for O.A.P. or pensioner discounts on hotels or tickets for tourist attractions until you’re 60 or 65 years old, you’ll be able to access senior cruise deals much sooner.

One great thing about senior discounts on cruises is that if one of you is under 55, you’ll both get the discount! In fact, anyone sharing a stateroom with someone over 55 may be eligible for the discount, this could even apply to children sharing with grandparents on a multi-generation family trip, depending on the cruise line.

How do I claim a senior citizen discount on my cruise?

When you call us to book, just mention to your cruise concierge that one or more of your party is over 55 and we will look up what deals are available and apply them to your booking for you.

There may be certain criteria that you have to meet to be eligible for a discount such as booking a certain number of months in advance. Senior discounts are also usually not combinable with other offers. So if you’re already getting a reduced price, free drinks or other free extras, you may be better off with this deal than with a senior discount. But we’ll be able to check this for you when you call us.

Are discounts available for certain occupations?

Some cruise lines also offer discounts for police officers, firefighters, NHS staff, teachers and the military. So if you have a job which sometimes enables you to access discounts for other things, it’s worth asking if you’re eligible for a discount your cruise. Just give our concierge team a call on 0808 1234 118

Hi Linda, Norwegian Cruise Line offer some fantastic deals for solo cruisers to the Caribbean. I’ve found an itinerary including Jamaica, Aruba, Willemstad and St Thomas in November this year (click here for full itinerary). Or, for something a little later, there is a similar sailing in April 2019 heading to San Juan, St. Thomas, Barbados and St. Martin (click here for full itinerary). Both offer drinks packages, pre-paid gratuities and $100 on-board spend per stateroom. If you like the look of these, or would like something else, please give our Cruise Concierge a call on 0808 1234 118 and they will be happy to find you our best deal. Thanks, Emma.

Hi Mary, as far as I’m aware, P&O don’t have a policy on discounts for senior citizens. The only ones that currently do include Carnival, Celebrity, MSC, Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean. Thanks, Emma.

I am 75 and my wife is 71, we have cruised over twenty times but due to the problems with Insurance we feel this will probably be our last cruise. We are looking for a 14 day cruise from Southampton to the Mediterranean with NO flying. An all inclusive would be a good way to quit. We are looking at June/July.

I have just read the over 55 reductions. It appears that if you have a free drinks bonus, you cannot get the OAP discounts. To me that is grossly unfair, you give with one hand and take more with the other. Not brilliant is it.

    Reply
    • Emma Smith

Hi Terry, unfortunately this is mainly led with the cruise line’s own terms and conditions. In some cases, it would be that multiple offers are non-combinable and so cannot be used in conjunction with one another. When you book through Cruise118.com, we always try to give you the best offer available however we cannot influence cruise line regulations around their discounts and offerings. Please speak with our Cruise Concierge team on 0808 1234 118 regarding any discounts and we will be able to let you know which offers are the best for you. Thanks, Emma.

Comment for Derek Dudley…sad to see you suggest could be last cruise due to insurance …why not try Barclays .,.they offer up to 80yrs so you don’t have to feel penalised because of age…you have to have an account with them but you pay insurance for a fee of £10.50 at the moment on a monthly rolling basis ie you stop payments insurance will cease…this fee also includes RAC cover as well……do try them or at least enquire ….you may get a few more cruises under your belt …good luck

Hi Emma I would like to book a surprise Alaska cruise for my husband’s 70th Birthday in April 2020, most likely departing in May/June as I believe this would be a good time to visit!! Quite like the idea of sailing with Holland America Line as I have read quite a few reviews about their cruise to Alaska. Perhaps you could advise regarding prices for this 9 day cruise holiday including flights from Dublin to Seattle with a balcony Stateroom and drinks package. Is there a special discount for pensioners 70 years and over? Many thanks, Margaret.

We are very concerned about cruises that have been overbooked and have waiting lists for cancellations. We feel we were scammed on a 32 day cruise from southampton to Perth Australia. Having booked on Cunard’s Queen Elizabeth for an early saver fare back in July. Took the advice of Cunard and used their Visa Agents CIBT UK. In plenty of time we filled in the required forms, my husband was granted his, but mine was rejected. We have travelled to Australia and New Zealand many times, and always applied for our own Visas on line – never any problems. We have to add, we are older people, 77 years for me and 82 for my husband. The 2nd attempt of applying was even worse, I was given a Likely Criminal Conviction and another refusal. This CIBT Co have trouble speaking the Queen’s English let alone transcribing forms to the Australian Embassy! By this time, time was running out for us furthering the plans for our cruise and we had to cancel the whole holiday as the stress wasctoo great for us. At CIBT’s request – on the 3rd attempt I was granted a visa on the 21st December – too close to the Christmas period. As we booked an ‘early saver fare’ we think we have been scammed, as the cruise ships really don’t want old people only those they think who will spend plenty with them on board and between the 2 companies sold on our stateroom at a much higher fare! We definitely have been scammed and this has come about by using these 2 companies Cunard/CIBT. Has anyone else had a similar experience please let us know. By the way we are young looking and not a couple of oldies and both in good health too
