As you’ll have probably learned if you’ve been following these Cruise Week blogs, there are many different aspects of your cruise experience – exciting destinations, delicious cuisine and amazing amenities to name but a few. But when it comes to keeping you entertained of an evening, there are some cruise lines which really pull out all the stops. Here’s a look at what’s on offer from seven of the top lines.
Royal Caribbean
It’s certainly fair to say that Royal Caribbean knows how to have a good time, with an incredible range of activities available on all its ships, day and night. The line is one of the few to offer actual Broadway productions as part of its evening entertainment programme, with shows such as Chicago, Hairspray and Saturday Night Fever all enjoying runs on-board. There’s also a wide choice of bars and lounges on-board all Royal Caribbean ships, where it’s possible to enjoy live music from both groups and solo acts, playing everything from piano jazz to pop favourites. The line also puts its on-board rinks to good use, holding spectacular ice shows, as well as water-based productions in Aqua Theatres on-board Oasis and Allure of the Seas.
Norwegian Cruise Line
Norwegian Cruise Line is a line which offers cruisers some truly original entertainment choices. Currently, the line’s Norwegian Epic is the only vessel on which you can enjoy the multimedia music and comedy tour-de-force that is a performance from Blue Man Group. The collective’s unique approach ensures that they enjoy a worldwide theatre touring schedule, so catching a performance is sure to be a highlight of your cruise. The Burn the Floor ballroom extravaganza is another NCL original, while the line also offers two venues where you can enjoy dinner and a show with a difference – The Illusionarium and Cirque Dreams – where food is served in a fabulous setting and accompanied by a magic or circus show.
P&O
P&O is a line which offers cruisers a bit of everything when it comes to evening entertainment. Twice-nightly shows offer everything from theatre-revue extravaganzas and headline performances from established musical acts to tribute artists and comedians. You’ll also find acts dotted around the ship’s smaller clubs and bars, from experienced house bands to talented pianists happy to take your requests. In a firm acknowledgement of pub culture, British cruisers will love the line’s pub quiz and karaoke nights, too. P&O also recently announced that it will be building on its popular Strictly Come Dancing themed sailings by introducing Strictly contests on all its vessels.
MSC
MSC Cruises is another line which really likes to mix it up when it comes to entertainment. There’s an excellent choice of live music on offer across all the line’s vessels from bands performing popular favourites to string quartets and Latin American specialists. There’s also plenty of opportunity for you to become the star yourself, whether you choose to take part in one of the karaoke sing-offs or exciting dancing competitions held on-board. When it comes to shows, the line offers over 80 completely different performances across its fleet, each original to the line and created by acclaimed artistic directors and choreographers.
Cunard
As you would imagine considering Cunard’s refined reputation, the entertainment on-board is thoroughly in keeping with the classy ambience of the three queens. The line is in possession of none other than the largest ballroom at sea, which can be found on-board the Queen Mary II and also private viewing boxes available in the theatres on Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth. You know you’ll be in for a professional evening when you consider the line’s ties with both the National Symphony Orchestra and RADA, with performances such as Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night and Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales taking place on-board. The line also offers contemporary dance and music shows such as Celtic Heartbeat and Jazz, Blues & Rock n Roll.
Carnival
Carnival’s ‘fun ships’ certainly live up to their reputation, with an array of entertainment choices available on-board. There’s a host of different live musical performances on offer whichever ship you choose, as well as a variety of acts in the Punchliner Comedy Club hosted by American stand-up and actor George Lopez. Renowned DJs and bands also regularly perform on-board. The star attraction however has to be Destination Unknown, a massive production show involving Las Vegas magician Jason Byrne, a huge cast and some fantastic illusions and special effects. Costumed singing and dancing stage shows are also part of the experience and Playlist Productions offer a choice of themed musical performances.
Fred.Olsen Cruise Lines
Fred.Olsen certainly knows how to offer a satisfying mixed bag of entertainment, specifically aimed at the British cruiser. Indeed, the line offers a number of themed nights, including British Night and Nautical Night. You can enjoy cabaret and dance performances, theatre revue shows and comedians, or if you just feel like taking it easy, a refined cocktail accompanied by a performance from your ship’s pianist could be just the thing. The line takes its dancing seriously too and offers solo cruisers the opportunity to take to the floor with one of its own dance hosts, no matter which vessel they choose to sail on.
