Enjoying a barbeque at sea

Cruise food

All this recent good weather has signified a mass dusting-off of the barbeque as we head for the garden to indulge in what has become a British tradition. After all, who knows when the next bout of sunny weather is due? Eating outdoors has indeed become a part of the great British Summer, with shops and supermarkets rolling out all many of culinary paraphernalia at the first sight of sun.

But what about those of us who’s own summer tradition is a cruise? Surely we’ll be missing out on the barbeque action? Well, not necessarily, because there’s plenty of grill-based culinary fun to be had it sea – you just have to look in the right places.

If you travel with Celebrity Cruises on the Celebrity Solstice, Reflection or Silhouette, you’ll have access to the Lawn Club; a half-acre of real grass on deck. Well, that’s the authentic BBQ setting covered, but what about the food itself? Enter the Lawn Club Grill. Here, you can try your hand at your very own BBQ master-dishes at the club’s custom-built, on-deck grill. There’s an expert chef on hand to help you with all manner of red meat, chicken and seafood dishes and Mediterranean vegetables and you can grill and marinade to your heart’s content and have the satisfaction of serving your hard work up to the family – just like back home.

If you book a Caribbean or Bahamas cruise with Royal Caribbean, Disney Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line or Princess Cruises, you’ll more than likely call at the respective line’s own private island for a day. Now, I’ll admit, a palm-tree lined Caribbean escape might not seem like the perfect setting for the quintessential British BBQ but come on, there are surely worse places to enjoy some of your favourite grilled delights? As well as all manner of beach games and water-based fun activities, cruise lines offer outdoor dining with a strong Caribbean theme throughout the day, so you can expect to enjoy barbequed chicken, steaks and ribs as part of your very own feast in paradise.

And, though they may not strive to recreate a barbecue atmosphere, there are plenty of cruise ships with outdoor dining areas and poolside bar and grill facilities, so you can enjoy barbeque-style food in the fresh air on your journey to your next port of call. Norwegian Epic’s Great Outdoors Bar and Grill, Thomson Dream’s Terrace Grill and Princess Cruises’ Poolside Trident Grill are just a few examples.
