Men, women and children of all ages are standing up to cancer this week. In a historic event, thousands of people took to the streets in 14 of Britain’s major cities on Saturday night, from Edinburgh to Bristol, to march in honour of all those who have lost their lives, all those still fighting and all those who have survived this terrible and all too common disease.
On top of this monumental march, this Friday 17th October Channel 4 has organised a full night of original entertainment and essential information to help raise money for the Stand Up to Cancer cause. Hosted by nation’s favourite Davina McCall, TV’s Dr Christian Jensen and funnyman Alan Carr, this all-night telethon will boast a wealth of famous faces from both sides of the Atlantic including Martin Freeman, Derren Brown, Rory McIlroy, Will Ferrell, Bradley Cooper, Pharrell, Britney Spears and Michael Sheen alongside many, many more for what is sure to be a night to remember.
At Cruise118.com, we are proud to support our own cancer charity, Sail 4 Cancer, which was set up in 2001 by a group of avid sailors who had all lost loved ones to the disease. The main purpose behind Sail 4 Cancer is to provide water-based respite days and holidays for people affected by cancer as well as their families. Not only this, the charity also makes donations to cancer care organisations and supports studies into how exercise can have a positive effect in preventing cancer and helping recovery after diagnosis.
Our ongoing relationship with Sail 4 Cancer began several years ago when, in partnership with the charity, we set up the John Bloodworth Fund, commemorating our former chairman John Bloodworth who sadly passed away after his battle with cancer at the age of 62 on 12th October 2011. Ever since, we have been supporting this important charity whenever and however possible, through a number of fundraising events and donations, including an occasion in April last year when two of our senior management team – James Cole and Ryan Johnston – went over to France to compete in the 2013 Paris Marathon, receiving plenty of sponsorship in the process.
To coincide with the current cancer charity fundraising event Stand Up to Cancer, we have once again decided to do all we can to help Sail 4 Cancer with their wonderful work. We will be donating £10 for every £1,000 spent on bookings this weekend 18/19th October 2014 with Cruise118.com – as well as our sister-brands SixStarCruises.co.uk and RiverVoyages.com. So if you’re contemplating securing your next exciting cruise getaway, now is a great time to book.
