What does P&O stand for?

P&O is an abbreviation of the company’s full name, which is The Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company. P&O was founded in 1837 as The Peninsular Steam Navigation Company, when the company was awarded a government contract carrying mail by sea. The ‘O’ for ‘Oriental’ was added in 1840, when the company extended its service to Egypt and the Orient.
