For the adventurous among us, cruising might not seem the most…active of pursuits. Of course, there’s always going to be a vocal population in the cruising world, one which enjoys nothing more than reclining in a sun lounger with a cocktail, presumably piled high with sparkly umbrellas and pineapple chunks galore, content with bronzing themselves in the sunshine.
But this entry is dedicated to the intrepid, those who are more likely to brave a raging waterfall than head down to the pool area and not actually swim. Those who are active cruisers, we salute you! So we’ve rounded up a collection of new destinations especially for the thrill-seekers amongst us.
Alaska
Gentle breezes stirring the branches of ferns, soft white snow that lightly crunches underfoot, adorable snow foxes. These are none of the things you should venture to the most thrilling state in the U.S for.
Yes, Alaska is picturesque, but it contains a locale which is known only as Kootznoowoo. Rough translation: Fortress of the Bears. A bear fortress. You read that correctly. Not only are there a huge population of bears roaming the Alaskan wilderness, but they have a stronghold to themselves. Giant predators aside, expect ice fishing, exploring glaciers by helicopter, and dog sledding across some of the most awe-inspiring landscapes known to modern man. And you wanted to go there for the souvenirs.
Hobart, Tasmania
When it comes to escaping the capital cities of Australia, there’s no better option that departing to the lush island of Tasmania. Hobart might be a city which could give Melbourne a run for its money, but it’s when you leave the boundaries of the suburbs behind and venture into the bush that the true potential of Hobart becomes apparent.
From the peak of Mount Wellington, which is just a few miles from the centre of the city, you can find a cycle descent which has to be experienced to be believed – a winding trail which uncovers supreme ocean views, grassy outcrops, and the huge seabirds that thrive on the shoreline. Hike or bike, this trail is a perfect way to get to know the landscape before you venture into the excitement of the township… unless you fancy an exploration of the sandy coves just a mile or so away.
The Bahamas
Known for unparalleled beach resorts, the Bahamas tends to suffer from a reputation of veering towards the luxury end of the travelling spectrum. Grab a snorkel and flippers however, and the shorelines of this idyllic island paradise become an adventure in the making.
Deep sea fishing off the coast of tiny islets, windsurfing on crystal ocean waters, and kayaking above huge coral structures which feature miniscule fish darting between outcrops… for the active traveller, there is no end to the off-shore fun. For a true exploration of the best of the islands, there are even guided spelunking tours – hidden caves abound!
Mexico
Cozumel and the Mayan peninsula are the two stand-outs from a region which is often unfairly overlooked – possibly because spring breakers and American teenagers are too busy taking up every hotel room in Cancun to notice.
The smaller locales of Talum and Cozumel are prime examples of the striking combination of natural beauty and historical intrigue that brings so many people to the coast of Mexico which straddles the Caribbean. Hikes which take you through 1000-year-old Mayan ruins,. Waters inundated with marine life, and waterfalls just waiting to be sought out by intrepid cruisers are just a few of the spectacular highlights awaiting travellers.
