Cunard celebrates 175th anniversary

It has been exactly 175 years since Cunard’s original Britannia set sail to America from British shores for the first time. Since then, this prestigious line has been treating guests to exciting voyages all over the globe including a wealth of fantastic transatlantic crossings. To celebrate this momentous anniversary, 2015 is set to be an incredible year for Cunard Line, with special proceedings and events set to feature aboard every Cunard cruise this year, as well as a number of fabulous events taking place around the world.

Three Queens meet on the Mersey

This coming bank holiday weekend between the 24th and 26th of May will see the start of Cunard’s anniversary celebrations in the UK as the three Queens – Queen Elizabeth, Queen Victoria and Queen Mary 2 – salute Liverpool and meet on the Mersey for the very first time for what is sure be an unforgettable display of the line’s entire fleet. The event will not only offer those present the chance to observe this majestic ships sailing in formation together and performing impressive manoeuvres in unison, but also enjoy light and firework shows as well as musical sail-away performances. Speaking about this upcoming event, Liverpool’s mayor Joe Anderson commented: “For months there has been a buzz around the city about the arrival of the three majestic liners on the Mersey. People are travelling far and wide to take in this maritime spectacle.”

Anniversary crossing

The celebrations will continue in Liverpool into the summer months when on 4th July, Cunard’s Queen Mary 2 will re-enact her original journey across the Atlantic which first took place 175 years ago. This epic transatlantic crossing will begin with numerous events ashore, including gala dinners, special guest speakers and more, before Queen Mary 2 leaves Liverpool to recreate her 4th July 1840 journey across the ocean to Halifax, Nova Scotia – the line’s founder Sir Samuel Cunard’s home town – before sailing south to call in Boston and New York City.

250th transatlantic voyage

Cunard will also be commemorating this momentous year on the other side of the Atlantic, when on 25th November 2015 Queen Mary 2 will embark from New York City on what will be her 250th transatlantic crossing. Those lucky enough to secure a place on this extraordinary milestone voyage will enjoy numerous celebrations on-board, including indulgent commemorative dinners and glamorous gala balls.
