Regular visitors to these pages may remember my initial reaction to the news that Disney had bought the rights to Star Wars and my what-if hopes for a Star Wars themed cruise. Well, here it is.
It’s fair to say that Star Wars fans (myself included) have been awaiting the release of The Force Awakens, the next long-awaited episode in the legendary space saga with a mixture of trepidation and anticipation. Jar Jar Binks cameo or not, with Disney at the helm (or should that be bridge?) it promises to be a big budget extravaganza which will see the original cast re-unite as their own stories continue.
In what is exciting news for cruise and sci-fi fans alike, Disney’s involvement means that the story from a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away will be coming soon to an ocean that’s not too far away, as Disney Cruise Line has just announced its Star Wars Days at Sea on selected Caribbean sailings. The eight themed sailings will take place on Disney Fantasy in 2016, with one day during each itinerary being dedicated to Star Wars-related celebrations designed to thrill and entertain both young Padawans and their Jedi masters who remember everything from the first time round.
As well as a themed deck party, passengers will have the opportunity to meet and greet their favourite characters including Darth Vader, Chewbacca and Boba Fett and join in special themed activities, trivia games and of course, have the chance to relive the excitement with screenings of the first six films in the series in the ship’s on-board cinema. As well as the classic movies, there will also be the chance to catch episodes of Disney’s own animated series, Star Wars Rebels.
Kids will love having the chance to meet and be photographed with their favourite characters, hone their Force and lightsaber skills at the on-board Jedi Academy as well as join in a host of themed games, art and craft sessions in the Oceaneer Club. Adults will be able to let out their inner Star Wars geek, thanks to a series of fact-based quizzes, the chance to buy special merchandise and also rub shoulders with the weirdest creatures in the universe as they attend ‘Mos Eisley cantina’ better known as the ship’s night club, where themed cocktails will be served through the night. Each stellar day will end in spectacular ‘fall of the Empire’ celebration style, with an incredible lighting, firework and pyrotechnic display, with lasers too, of course.
If you want to join in the celebrations, the Star Wars Day at Sea will take place on Western Caribbean cruises setting sail on January 9, January 23, February 6, February 20, March 5, March 19, April 2 and April 16, 2016. To book your place on any of these sailings, just make the calculations for the jump to light speed and take a trip through cyberspace to our Disney page, where we have all these cruises and more available.
