Holland America Line has this week revealed the name of its forthcoming new cruise ship, due to make its ocean debut in February 2016.
The 99,500-ton ms Koningsdam will be the first vessel in a new Pinnacle Class and continues a 141-year Holland America Line tradition of naming each ship with the ‘dam’ suffix. As for the rest of the ship’s name, ‘koning’ means ‘king’ in Dutch, ensuring that the ship’s name is in keeping with the line’s long and proud Dutch heritage and also celebrating the regal stature of the vessel. The name is also a tribute to the Netherlands’ King Willem-Alexander, the country’s first king for more than a hundred years.
Stein Kruse, the line’s Chief Executive Officer, said: “…This new Pinnacle Class ship will be our largest, most contemporary vessel, and it was only fitting to give it a name that embodies great achievement for the future, while embracing timeless tradition.”
Koningsdam is set to feature interiors by two leading designers – Adam D Tihany and Bjorn Storbraaten. The latter has worked with the line before, designing public areas for both ms Eurodam and ms Nieuw Amsterdam, while Tihany is regarded as one of the world’s leading hospitality designers.
