P&O set to sail into the 1980s

P&O themed cruises

As a music fan and a child of the 80s, the news of P&O Cruises’ I Love the 80’s sailing naturally caught my interest.

Though my 1980s musical tastes tend to favour either minimalist electro or over-the-top heavy metal, I must admit, there’s something appealing about a cruise which can take me back to the everyday sounds of the decade; a time when Top of the Pops was compulsive viewing and frankly, you were nobody if you didn’t make the poster section of Look-in or Smash Hits.

Realising the pulling potential of this most eclectic of musical decades, P&O Cruises is hosting an I Love the 80s cruise, specifically the long-running and ever-popular Here and Now show, which since 2001 has been a nostalgic runaway success, with as a host of different 80s acts strutting their stuff in successive shows. I Love the 80’s features six different influential 80s acts, performing on successive nights of a 12-night Mediterranean cruise.

So, who will we see? Well, it’s a balanced mixed bag of boys and girls. Leading the lads is none other than 80s teen idol Paul Young, who’ll be laying his hat and calling the Oceana home as he treats guests to such hits as Love of the Common People and Everytime You Go Away. Also Joining him on the cruise will be fellow 80’s songsmith and multi-instrumentalist Howard Jones, who’ll surely like to get to know P&O cruisers well, and Sheffield’s own New-wavers Heaven 17, who’ll no doubt be trying their best to lead them into temptation.

Heading up the girls is none-other than punk’s original princess Toyah, whose crazy hair styles and eye-catching outfits were as ever-changing as her musical style. It’s a fair bet she’ll be concentrating on her more commercial hits during the cruise, though whether or not she’ll dust off one of her famous get-ups remains a mystery. Joining her will be fiery T-Pau frontwoman Carol Decker, who’ll be sure to show cruisers a little bit of Heart and Soul and former Altered Images’ singer and sometime actress Claire Grogan, who’ll no doubt be singing Happy Birthday to you, whether it’s your birthday or not.

I Love the 80s takes place on P&O’s 12-night Western Mediterranean voyage, on the P&O Oceana which sets sail on 22 October and which will visit  such ports as Malaga, Barcelona, Gibraltar and Lisbon.
