Clichés aren’t always a bad thing, despite the definition. Technically for something to be a cliché, it has to have been overused or overdone to the point of losing its original meaning, or to have become irritating. But just because it’s not as ‘special’ or unique as it once was, doing something clichéd can still be fun, particularly if you treat it as something a bit light-hearted. Here’s my list of ten clichés around the world that you could enjoy on a cruise.
Drink tequila in Mexico
There are few drinks that are so strongly associated with a whole country as tequila is with Mexico, so make sure you down a shot of this tipple while you call at one of the main ports, or pick up a bottle to bring home.
Huskie ride in Alaska
This perfectly illustrates why clichés can still be fun. Yes, everyone who goes to Alaska will want to try a dog-sled ride, but that’s with good reason – it’s a really fun way to explore the surrounding scenery.
Hold up the Leaning Tower
Anyone that goes to Pisa wants to see the famous Leaning Tower. And almost everyone will want to take that traditional photo where it looks like you’re holding the tower up and stopping it from falling. Don’t be ashamed to join that club.
Propose on the Eiffel tower
I was going to write that proposing on the Eiffel Tower has become too common place and as such has lost a lot of that special meaning but really, we’re starting to see more of a focus on the extravagant. Maybe this has just started to climb out of being a cliché to ensure it’s enough of a surprise.
Gondola ride in Venice
The problem with gondola rides in Venice these days is that a number of gondoliers just don’t make the effort any more. Don’t be surprised if you see many dressed in jeans and a tshirt. But if you check the side streets rather than the main canal you will find those in authentic dress.
BBQ in Australia
Any of the Australian ports would make for a great time to enjoy a BBQ. This is extremely stereotypical but don’t let that worry you – Bondi Beach is one of my own personal favourite spots for a relaxing afternoon with great food.
Swim with dolphins in Florida
Is there anyone out there who’s been to Florida that hasn’t swum with dolphins? It seems to almost be law. Even then that doesn’t stop it from being a fun activity, even if it may have lost some of the mystical aura that it once had.
Pyramids in Egypt
I can’t think of a more iconic landmark than the Great Pyramid. If you haven’t been, and your cruise calls at a port in Egypt, dig out an excursion to Giza and see what the fuss is all about. Just because it’s what everyone does, doesn’t mean it’s one to be avoided.
Rickshaw in Thailand
Rickshaws make up a lot of the basic transport in parts of Asia, including those that are automatic. However on a cruise to Thailand you should definitely opt for the more authentic cycle version as a means of seeing your destination in a fun way.
Hula on Hawaii
The hula is the dance of Hawaii, and it’s one that you need to see live in person to truly appreciate. It’s a dance that can express all kinds of emotions from reverence to frivolity, and if done by someone who knows what they’re doing, an enchanting experience.
