Royal Caribbean’s brand-new vessel, Quantum of the Seas, is due to debut next year with an extra spring in its step and a song in its heart, thanks to the announcement that the popular hit musical Mamma Mia! will feature as part of the ship’s entertainment programme.
Quantum of the Seas will set sail from the New York area in November 2014 and though full details of its entertainment programme are yet to be announced, Royal Caribbean revealed a number of elements in grand style, by way of its ‘A World at Sea’ float, which passed through Manhattan as part of the now-iconic Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade this week.
Lisa Lutoff-Perlo, Executive Vice President of Operations at Royal Caribbean International, was clearly proud of the announcement, saying: “The debut of Mamma Mia! on-board Quantum of the Seas continues to raise the bar of what we offer our guests on-board our latest ground-breaking ship. Since introducing Hairspray on-board Oasis of the Seas in 2009, our Tony award-winning musical productions have been incredibly well-received by guests, and we are proud to expand our Broadway at sea offerings with our fourth licensed main-stage production…”
For anyone who doesn’t already know, Mamma Mia! is one of the most successful contemporary musicals of recent times and features the hit songs of Swedish pop icons ABBA, which help to tell its story. Passengers on Quantum of the Seas will be able to enjoy the tale of a girl, set to marry on a Greek island, who on the eve of her wedding embarks on a quest to discover the identity of her father, which brings three men from her mother’s past to the island.
Royal Caribbean is the only cruise line to offer Tony Award-winning musicals on the ocean wave and other performances in its glitzy show cannon include Chicago on Allure of the Seas and Saturday Night Fever on Liberty of the Seas. Mamma Mia! on Quantum of the Seas will be the fourth such production, so who knows what the line has in store for its next Quantum Class vessel, Anthem of the Seas?
