Art has long been a big part of the cruising heritage. The on-board art auction was once a mainstay of many a ship’s events programme and indeed, it still is on some cruise ships. Ships’ art galleries continue to be popular with many a respected artist’s work on display and in public areas, it’s usual to see artwork displayed at regular intervals, such as in passenger stairwells and lift areas – often a collection of a featured artist’s work.
One line which is clearly embracing this tradition and taking it decisively into the modern age of cruising is Royal Caribbean. Surrounding guests with an on-board art gallery on its forthcoming Quantum of the Seas vessel, Royal Caribbean is clearly making a firm artistic statement. The ship will feature a range of cutting-edge installations, sculptures and paintings in a theme which will be called ‘What Makes Life Worth Living’. A wall of butterflies, a huge pink polar bear and a portrait (with a difference) of the legendary pop artist Andy Warhol are just some of the artworks you can expect to see from November 2014 when the ship sets sail, and the theme is set to continue on the ship’s sister vessel Anthem of the Seas in spring 2015.
Royal Caribbean’s Allure of the Seas is another excellent choice for art-loving cruisers, as its Central Park neighbourhood features a number of sculptures by renowned Brazilian artist Romero Britto, in a collection inspired by the ‘Cultures of the World’.
Royal Caribbean has considered art a big part of the cruising experience that it offers for many years and has invested almost $200 million in artwork, meaning that today, it owns one of the world’s largest private art collections. International Corporate Art has curated displays for the line for over 20 years, ensuring that each ship has a distinct individual theme to its artistic display.
