Situated on the southern coast of Cuba, the colonial town of Cienfuegos is known as ‘La Perla del Sur’ or the Pearl of the South, and with great reason. It is both thriving and relaxed – a laidback destination that doesn’t lose any of that fiery Caribbean spirit. It has many French influences too, giving the town a certain sophistication with its mix of neoclassical, art nouveau and art deco architecture. Make sure you don’t miss the Acro de Triunfo, Cienfuego’s own ‘Arc de Triumph’, which is dedicated to the independence of Cuba.
If you want to unwind, then the pristine sands and lapping clear waters of the Playa Rancho Luna beach are nearby, offering the perfect place to recharge and listen to the gentle sounds of the ocean. Or head inland, to the Parque el Nicho, where you’ll discover stunning pools and waterfalls for a truly soothing and yet exciting adventure. Other must-see attractions include the magnificent Botanical Gardens, with a huge collection of tropical plants, and the Castillo de Jagua, an incredible castle that you’ll need to travel to by small boat.
There are two currencies used in Cienfuegos - the Cuban Convertible and the Cuban Peso. Cienfuegos is 4 hours behind Greenwich Mean Time (GMT -4).
