Heimaey is an island off the south coast of Iceland and is part of a group of islands called Vestmannaeyjar. Due to a volcanic eruption in 1973, much of Heimaey was destroyed. Six months down the line - when the volcano had become dormant – the majority of the islanders returned to rebuild their homes and lives – and made Heimaey one of Iceland's main fishing ports that it is today. With a wonderful array of wildlife and stunning landscapes, today it's a firm favourite with nature lovers. Heimaey is a bird watchers paradise too - particularly during the summer months when millions of Puffins – along with other migrating birds - decide to make their home here.
You'll find the majority of Heimaey's shops situated around the town centre and from them you can buy a variety of merchandise. Local specialities include woollen knitwear – such as sweaters, cardigans and mittens, handmade ceramics and silver jewellery.
The local currency in Heimaey is the krona. Heimaey is 1 hour behind Greenwich Mean Time (GMT -1).
