Yangon, formerly known as Rangoon, is a phenomenal destination that showcases all that makes Myanmar worthy of a cruise holiday. Visit historical temples, shop in massive markets, see natural beauty surrounding the rivers and experience a wealth of culture in one epic port. Make sure you begin with a visit to Shwedagon Pagoda, the holiest Buddhist shrine in the country. It’s also magnificently ornate too, covered entirely in gold and decorated with a mix of rubies, emeralds, sapphires and diamonds – with the 76-carat diamond atop the shrine as the true centrepiece.
Head to Scott Market, the largest in the city, where you’ll find over 2,000 shops and stalls – so you’re sure to find a souvenir or two to take home with you. Take in performances of traditional Myanmar dance from local professionals, or take a stroll through Mahabandoola Park, with its Independence Monument celebrating Burma’s independence from the British. There’s also the National Museum, with around 5,000 artefacts detailing the vast history and culture of Myanmar, along with the Bon Pyan monastery across the river in Thanlyin amongst many other pagodas.
The Kyat is the official currency of Yangon. Yangon is 6 and a half hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT +6:30).
