The capital of Sardinia, Cagliari is the “greenest” Italian city. Offering the best of everything: architectural wonders, historic monuments and tranquil lagoons, Cagliari has it all. Inhabited since ancient times, this is a place rich in history. The old part of the city is dominated by a medieval castle and cathedral - protected by walls nearly 1,000 years old. The church of ‘San Lucifero' and the Paleo-christian ‘Basilica of San Saturnino' are among the oldest temples in Sardinia - definitely worth a visit. And, after the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe was found at the ‘Basilica of San Saturnino', it became considered as the place where miracles happen. If you're after a spot of relaxation, head to one of the sandy white beaches. ‘Poetto' is the main beach here – stretching up to 13 kilometres from Sella del Diavolo (the Devil's Saddle) up to the coastline of Quartu Sant'Elena, it's one of the longest beaches in Italy.
The main shopping street, 'Via Roma, is full of shopping arcades. And the shops on 'Via Manu' are definitely worth checking out too. The local gallery situated in ‘Santa Croce' sells the island's traditional handicrafts. Handicrafts can also be bought from ‘San Benedetto'— it's one of the largest covered markets in Europe. Popular purchases in Cagliari include ceramics, wrought iron, paper maché and leather goods.
The local currency is the Euro. Sardinia is 1 hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT +2).
