Balmoral Reviews

Me and my wife went on the Balmoral on a Baltic cruise. The ship was very British which we loved as weve been with lots of different cruise lines and find that the American ships are not for us. The cruise departed from Southampton which meant no flights were involved. The staff on board were all very friendly and approachable and we made lots of new friends over the two week cruise. The destinations we stopped at were all fantastic as well as the shore excursions. Our favourite stop was St Petersburg in Russia where we went on a sightseeing tour. The excursion was great and we didnt have to worry about arranging our own visas. The entertainment on board was fantastic with a different variety of shows each night. There was also a buffet on board which was great for night when we didnt want to dress up.

Still relatively new to cruising, overall the Balmoral delivered a high standard in practically every aspect. We had a superior outside cabin which was lovely, the picture window made it great for watching the ship pull in to the ports. Our cabin stewardess was excellent, very helpful and attentive.

We loved the food, our favourite dish was definitely the Grilled fillet salmon with crayfish butter and the cheese boards are scrumptious. Staffs on board and in the restaurants are very helpful nothing feels like too much to ask.

The entertainment on board was second to none; we were never bored or trying find to find something to do. We only spent a week on board but with all the wonderful shows like cabaret, live music, I and my husband even got up to do some dancing. The Bar prices were more or less average pub prices which was a pleasant surprise.

The pool and Jacuzzi areas were very good, lovely to sit and relax in on a warm day and watch the world go by.

We would definitely cruise the Balmoral again and would have no reservation in recommending it to others.

What a lovely ship!!! Upon entering the ship we were greeted by friendly staff on board the ship with refreshments. My first impressions of the ship was that for a small ship the Balmoral had plenty of space and I never at any moment felt cramped. The cabin sizes on board the ship were small however they were still adequate for getting around in. There was also enough space to do what you needed to do and the bathroom in most the standard cabins were of a perfect size. The balcony suites, and other suites on board were beautiful, they were decorated lovely and I thought they were huge. From the bedding to the layout and the curtains, the room layout and décor was modern and fresh, the feeling you got whilst inside the cabins was cosy and inviting.

The food was amazing- if you like your typical British foods then you would love the Balmoral. I have a lush chicken salad followed by a scrumptious chocolate cake and cream. May I add the service at lunch time was exceptional, I felt like royalty. The staff really do know how to make your relax and enjoy your meal, nothing was ever too much for them, as one of my colleagues was vegetarian they went out the way to create a whole new menu to accommodate his dietary requirements.

The salon area and gym were both immaculately clean and looked after and modern and easy to find. As I mentioned before about the ship being a small ship, it still had a good sized theatre for evening entertainment and plentiful seating for guests in the evening to enjoy the complimentary entertainment that Fred Olsen has to offer within the evening. I thoroughly enjoyed my trip on the Balmoral and I wont hesitate in booking a Christmas mini cruise as the intimate yet welcoming feeling you get on-board the ship just makes you want to come back time and time again.

The crew were marvelous to those passengers who needed assistance on the excursions especially when the trips needed tenders to get off and on the Balmoral. No wonder many of the passengers are repeat cruisers.

Balmoral feels like my second home floating out on the ocean taking me to beautiful places. The staff know my name, they know where I like to sit and my favourite tipple and I always feel so comfortable and special onboard. Every time I have cruised with Fred Olsen I always find the food to be absolutely first class and the staff never faulter- I have also made wonderful friends on my cruises as the guests are so like minded and enjoy the finer things in life but having fun too. Fred Olsen deliver for me every time and I cannot imagine cruising with anybody else.

We have had a fantastic time on the Balmoral last year, it is a great ship! There is such a great personal and friendly touch to this cruise liner without it being as huge as some of the others. Embarkation went very smoothly and we had to wait about an hour in total but we were moving constantly and greeted with a smile. The plus point to boarding in the UK is your not constantly moving your bags as your trying to check in as these have already been taken for you!

We stayed in an inside cabin which was very pleasant, the décor was to a lovely standard and the rooms were very spacious and well thought out. We didn’t spend much time in the room so it was sufficient for what we used it for. It was always kept very clean by our steward who was a lovely young man who always wanted to make sure everything was perfect for us!

There was a lot of excellent choice regarding the food on board especially for breakfast, we loved getting up and the amazing smells coming out of the restaurant made us want to stay in there all day. Lunch and dinner were just as superb! The choice was excellent and always something new to try, our waitress was so helpful and always remembered I like my coffee after dinner with one sugar and a dash of milk! I’ve never been anywhere else were you get service like you do on a cruise ship. The bars and lounges were very well places, they never seem to be crowded, you could always get a seat and the drinks prices were the same as you local put and there is never a service charge which some American Ships add.

And last but not by all means least the entertainment was AMAZING! The shows were just out of this world, I would say the best theatre shows we have seen whilst cruising which is saying something. The team were just fantastic, you normally have to pay about £50 each to see this sort of stuff.

We will definitely be returning to the Balmoral.

The Balmoral is brilliant, me and my wife always book onto Fred Olsens ships, once you have been on one of them you have been on all of them, meaning that you are going to have a great cruise every time! The food was excellent, the price we ended up paying was great and to top it all off our trusty barman remembered our names! This will not be our last Fred Olsen cruise.

We recently cruised on the Balmoral with Fred Olsen. This was our first cruise and I was quite unsure as I am wheelchair bound. We embarked in the port of Southampton and the whole process was flawless; there was plenty of accessibility for me and the staff were knowledgeable and attentive which really put me at ease. We were keen on Fred Olsen and we were recommended the Balmoral by our concierge at cruise 118 as it was the best of their ships for wheelchair accessibility. They got it spot on for us! Our cabin was spacious and had all the facilities needed, there were plenty of grab rails in the wet room and there were bed rails too which again was perfect for my piece of mind! We requested a chair in the shower and that was there before we got to our cabin which was fantastic! The door frame was plenty wide enough for me to manoeuvre without trouble and there was no problem at all getting around the ship. The staff were readily available to help out when my husband was struggling and getting on and off the ship was no hassle at all. We are over the moon to have found the Balmoral as we felt really limited for our holiday options. But this is perfect, we can go on holiday with flying, have fantastic support from all staff on board and see places in the world we wouldn’t even have considered.

Sailing on The Balmoral was a fantastic experience for me and my Husband. There was always something to do, whether it be relaxing in the spa, or something a little bit more active in the fitness and aerobics centre, we were never bored. The range of things to do, on what is a relatively small ship really impressed us both.

Had a lovely cruise on Balmoral, just the right size & very easy to get around I don’t like these big ships so this was perfect for me. Very friendly staff who always remembered my name, great choice of food & entertainment I would definitely book this cruise again.

The staff on board were so welcoming and friendly…there was always space on board to enjoy a quiet moment. The atmosphere was so relaxed and informal. Dining Al Fresco was excellent.

A variety of entertainment was performed every night! Tea and a tempting array of sandwiches is served at around 3.30 everyday which we really enjoyed. The Balmoral carries just 1350 guests which was just about right for us. I loved the informal buffet style Palms Café. 2 open air swimming pools, a gym with magnificent sea views. Some golf nets were available to help with your golf swing!

You can also just relax in one of the on deck Jacuzzis and pamper yourself in the beautiful spa.

Extensive library on board…We had a beautiful outside cabin but I did have a look at the other cabin also they looked very spacious. Really enjoyed this cruise and would go back again.

We went on the Balmoral in October and this was our 30th Cruise!! We have never cruised with Fred Olsen before but we were pleasantly surprised. The Balmoral holds around 1300 passengers which was great for us as the ship is relatively small. We felt the ship was geared to more mature passengers and there was a lovely British theme on the ship. It was half term at the time of the cruise and there were around 50 children on board, they seemed well catered for even though Fred Olsen isn’t really a child friendly cruise. There were set times in the buffet and food was generally good with a variety of hot and cold dishes. Evening dining was traditional wish set times and tables. The menus were varied and always included ‘British Traditional Favourites’. There were 3 different dining rooms and service was great, the staff were always very helpful and friendly. There was lots of different entertainment on board in the day and evening. There was a large library with a great selection of books to borrow and there was also quizzes at lunch time which were good fun. There were also craft classes, cookery demonstrations and dance lessons on sea days. The evening entertainment on board was fantastic; they were defiantly the best shows I have seen on a cruise so far. The entertainment included comedians, talent shows and magicians. There were two formal evenings where almost everybody dressed up. There was also a tropical evening and a rock and roll evening, however, only a third of people dressed up on these evenings which was a shame. We had a great time on our first Fred Olsen cruise and look forward to going again.

The thing that attracted to me about Fred Olsen was the fact the ships sail out of the UK. I wasn’t particularly keen on flying, and when I saw the Balmoral sails out of the UK and was Fred Olsen’s newest and biggest cruise ship, I couldn’t wait to book my cruise! I’ve been on lots of cruises and to be honest none of the other cruise lines had exactly what I look for in a cruise but Fred Olsen ticked all my boxes. It was quiet and intimate and relaxing, and not too much hustle and bustle like some of the other busier, larger cruise lines. Balmoral is able to carry 1300 passengers, which for me is just about the perfect size. It wasn’t too large and not so tiny either that it didn’t even feel like you were on a ship. I am quite traditional and loved the fact that Fred Olsen tailored to British tastes - sailing from the UK being the most obvious perk but just the general feel, atmosphere and décor were perfectly British.

During the evening we enjoyed going to the Neptune Lounge every night where each evening they put on a range of different shows, such as cabarets, dancing, comedians, live music and much more. I loved the fact that they had two performances a night, so no matter what sitting you were on for dinner, you could ensure you would not miss the show.

My husband and I especially liked the formal aspect of the cruise as we don’t often get a chance to really dress up to the nines so getting our glad rags out was all part of the fun. And another perk about sailing from Southampton; we had no luggage allowance, so yes of course I took a whole suitcase just full of shoes - much to my husband’s annoyance!

We sat on a table of 8 and got to know the people round our table so well as we sat with them every night. It was all part of the experience, and we swapped email addresses and plan to stay in touch. Just loved the whole thing! 10/10 from me!

Fred Olsen’s Ship Balmoral is the Largest in their Fleet of 4 Ships. She carries approx. 1300 passengers and since her launch in 2008 has become a firm favourite with British Cruisers.

Having previously been with other cruise companies under different names, Balmoral has been fully Refurbished to reflect a modern, comfortable and friendly British Ship.

Appropriately the Public areas carry on the Scottish theme, The Main Restaurant “Ballindalloch” is names after another Castle and the other 2 dining rooms are named after two lovely Scottish Salmon Rivers Avon and the Spey.

Balmoral will offer you a cruise experience that defines the Art of Cruising British Style. You are never far away from a proper British Cup of Tea. The Food appeals to the British Palette and the currency on board is the British Pound. English is the only Language that you will hear over the internal address system and that will not be very often as Fred. Olsen believes in keeping on board announcements to an absolute minimum, so that you can relax and enjoy your holiday without the constant interruption.

The Crew on Board will remember your name, Drink Preference and nothing is ever too much trouble for them. One of the main reasons why Fred. Olsen customers return year after year to Balmoral and her 3 sisters, Black Watch, Boudicca and Braemar.

Being the biggest ship within Fred Olsens fleet I expected it to lose its trade mark "intimate feel" on board. This definitely was not the case. The ship has a surprising ability to provide all the facility's that you would expect from a larger ship, without imposing on the main focus of this cruise line.

This is our 4th trip on this ship and we love it! The crew are great and so friendly and remember us when we go. We only have an inside cabin as not worried about spending much time in there as we make use of all the entertainment and trips available. Met up with some old friends onboard too.
