Honolulu, located on the island of Oahu, is Hawaii’s capital and naturally the port most often frequented by cruise ship visitors, thanks to the truly diverse range of attractions on offer. Honolulu is home to the setting for one of modern history’s most significant events, Pearl Harbour, and naturally an excursion there is always a popular one with cruise ship visitors. Today, the harbour hosts a memorial to the USS Arizona and her 1,177 crew members who lost their lives during the attack on the harbour on December 7, 1941. It’s certainly a moving experience, and a must-do when visiting the capital. Visitors can step further back into Hawaii’s history with a trip to Iolani Palace, which was once the official residence of Hawaii’s last ruling monarch King Kalakaua and his wife Queen Liliuokalani. The Polynesian Cultural Centre is another popular excursion for those wanting to immerse themselves in the island’s heritage and can be found in the north of Oahu. Far more than simply a museum, it offers a multi-sensory experience for visitors – with music, cuisine, arts, crafts and games all part of the experience.
Hilo is commonly known as Hawaii’s Big Island, ensuring that there’s plenty to see. The Hawaii Volcanoes National Park offers you the chance to be amazed by two of the most active volcanoes on the planet – and as far as stepping back in time on the island, you can’t get much farther back than this, where you’ll be able to see lava landscapes shaped millions of years ago. The Lava Tree State Park offers more volcanic attractions in the form of a number of otherworldly lava trees, shaped by a flow which left behind numerous strange moulds. For visitors who prefer their natural wonders a little more green, Hilo has a wealth of stunning natural gardens to explore. The Tropical Botanical Garden for example is a popular cruise excursion, boasting around 2,000 different species of plants. There are also plenty of waterfalls on the island, but the Rainbow Falls are amongst the most spectacular. At 80 feet they’re by no means the island’s tallest falls, but they are arguably the most beautiful – and have earned their name because of the colours their cascading waters create when they hit the natural pool below.
Maui, the second largest island of the Hawaii archipelago, is often consider as one of the best islands in the world, due to its friendly locals, stunning landscape and bountiful wildlife, including a large humpback whale population during the winter months and the Hawaiian monk seal. The people you encounter here will instantly welcome you with open arms. The island offers a true sense of paradise and you´ll be immersed by the fascinating culture. The beaches also make this island definitely worth the visit. The lao Valley State Park (a.k.a. Valley of the Kings) is a real tropical paradise. You are guaranteed to be impressed throughout your time here.
