The re-imagining of the Disney Cruise Line ship the Disney Magic, which I’ve blogged about already, has now been completed and we’ve seen inside the Avengers Academy, one of the great new features on-board. And it looks amazing. Let me talk you through the details of what may arguably become the best kids club/activity at sea, if not around the world. Genuinely, that’s how cool I think it is. And I know cool.
The whole area of the Oceaneer club is designed to be like a S.H.I.E.L.D. office, with the instantly-recognisable eagle logo everywhere including on the floor. Children enter through a S.H.I.E.L.D. scanner doorway, which lights up and assigns each child an Avenger to be loyal to, including Captain America, Hulk, Hawkeye, Iron Man and others.
Once they’ve enrolled this way, they’ll take part in a two-day programme which includes designing their own superhero, and virtually dressing up in an Iron Man suit, for an interactive game on the big screen. Every child who registers receives their own special ID badge to prove they’ve become an official recruit of S.H.I.E.L.D. before taking part in games and activities to protect the ship from evil super villains including Red Skull.
On display in the S.H.I.E.L.D. area are one of Iron Man’s suits of armour, Captain America’s shield, and Mjolnir, the hammer of Thor. Of course each is labelled as a training replica, since the real Avengers are the owners of the real items.
And then the best bit – during the activities, Captain America himself will pay the children a visit to talk to them about their two-day mission, and to pose for photographs. Cap’ will also be available around the ship at other times, so that children who’ve decided not to take part in the Avengers Academy, and adults like me, can grab a photo too.
Frankly, I am beyond excited for this.
