It’s been quite a year for Cunard, with the three queens historically meeting in Liverpool in May as part of the line’s 175th anniversary celebrations and a number of landmark sailings taking place throughout the year. Certainly not a line to sit on its admittedly regal laurels though, Cunard is beginning its next cruising era with an extensive refurbishment of its prestigious flagship, Queen Mary 2.
This most iconic of vessels will undergo a refit in summer 2016, which will take place in Hamburg’s Blohm + Voss Shipyard between May 27 and June 21. In what is great news for future Cunard passengers, much of the renovations will be centred around accommodations, with 15 new single staterooms planned which will measure either 178 or 172 square feet, and feature two ocean view windows. Though this is an undoubted plus for solo travellers, the line is keen to point out that the rooms have been planned in response to the increasing numbers of multigenerational families travelling together, who may be in need of a single room to better accommodate their cruising party.
Everyone loves a balcony and Cunard knows this, which is why another part of the refurbishment will be the addition of 30 new Britannia Club Balcony Staterooms, which will offer plenty of space and a separate seating area. If you opt for one of these rooms, it’s good to know that you’ll also be able to take advantage of the flexible dining times on offer in the Britannia Club restaurant.
It’s not just passengers with an upright disposition who’ll benefit from the refit, as Cunard has announced an expansion of its kennel facilities to better accommodate cruisers’ best friends. Indeed, Queen Mary 2 is the only cruise liner in the world which offers dedicated kennels, making it the natural choice for those who love to cruise with their canines. Interestingly, to help make pooches feel even more at home, the ship’s special dog-walking area will feature a lamppost for UK and European dogs and a fire hydrant for USA animals, so territories can be effectively marked out, even when at sea!
If you’re a dog lover who’s keen to cruise, you’ll be pleased to know we have a great selection of 2016 cruises available on Queen Mary 2.
