If the Eastern Mediterranean is a region which takes your cruising fancy, then you’ll certainly be tempted by the charms of Cyprus.
Featuring in a number of itineraries which explore the region, these cruises offer you the opportunity to explore the many attractions of the island, both historical and natural.
Cyprus became independent in 1960 and is split between the Turkish north and Greek south, with EU members allowed to travel freely between both areas. All cruises to Cyprus head to the port of Limassol, which is on the south coast of the island within the Greek territories.
Cruises to Cyprus are generally part of Eastern Mediterranean cruises - but they are sometimes included as a stop on a number world cruise itineraries. Whether you want a shorter cruise holiday or something more substantial, you're sure to find an itinerary including Cyprus to suit your needs.
Limassol is the second biggest city on the island, making it a great base for excursions. It's close to numerous sites of interest, perfect for a driving tour of the area, giving you the chance to see as much of the town and surrounding locations as possible during your visit to Cyprus.
Some of these include the port of Paphos, which features fascinating ancient ruins, the Rock of Romios where Aphrodite is claimed to have emerged from the waters, and the House of Dionysus, an excavated Roman villa from the third Century with beautiful mosaic decorations. Paphos also boasts some excellent beaches if simply relaxing in the sun is what you have in mind during your time on port.
Limassol itself has a magnificent castle which is medieval in origin and believed to be the site where Richard the Lionheart was married. There's a quaint square around the castle, as well as a charming old town where you can relax in one the laid-back cafes and browse the interesting shops.
For something more relaxing, there are excursions available within the city that give you time to unwind and explore at your own pace, with excellent shopping available should this interest you. Some cruise lines also organise traditional lunches so you can experience real Cypriot cuisine for a truly authentic taste of life on the island.
You can head into the Troodos Mountains for a scenic tour either on foot or as part of a jeep safari, where you can either take a guided trek through the forests or pay a visit to the resort of Troodos itself, where you can shop for souvenirs at a leisurely pace.
If you have an interest in winemaking, then make sure to book an excursion that incorporates Omodos. A quaint township surrounded by vineyards, it makes for a fascinating excursion.
Other excursions take you to Nicosia, the capital of the island. This city offers a great range of attractions, from contemporary shopping to the intricate and ornate St John's Cathedral in Archbishop's Palace Square. There are museums, cafes, restaurants and art galleries to discover too, with more than enough to keep you entertained during a visit.
Other destinations including Larnaka and Lefkara, as well as Ayia Napa, are also offered as part of some cruise excursions, giving you even more options for places to see when you're looking at cruises to Cyprus.
